Washington vs. Philadelphia
Anytime Alexander Ovechkin and Sydney Crosby get together, it is quite a spectacle. This was the case on Sunday as Washington defeated Pittsburgh 5-2 behind Ovechkin's goal an assist. He and his teammates will attempt to continue their winning ways when they welcome Philadelphia into the Verizon Center on Tuesday.
The Capitals (38-17-5) star has a league-best 43 goals and leads his team with 77 points. He has been effectively shutdown in both of these categories in his two meetings with the Flyers this season.
Over his past dozen games, Ovechkin has scored 12 times and tallied 18 points. He even got under the skin of Crosby in the waning moments of Sunday's game.
Jose Theodore figures to get the start for the Capitals since he has fared well against the Flyers, going 4-1-0 with a 2.02 goals against average in his last five games.
Philadelphia (31-17-9) saw their three-game winning streak broken when they dropped a home game to Pittsburgh on Saturday as Crosby netted the game winner with 2:45 remaining in the game.
Crosby's goal, by his own admission, was nothing spectacular. He simply took advantage of a mistake by Philly goalie Martin Biron, who failed to clear the pick after a Pascal Dupuis breakaway. The puck landed on Crosby's stick and found its way to the back of the empty net.
Still the Flyers have won five out of their last seven, largely behind the efforts of Mike Richards and Mike Knuble. Each player has scored in the last three games. Richard has tallied nine points in those three games.
The rivals have split their last six games, including a pair this season with each team winning on their home ice.

Montreal -120 vs. Philadelphia
Last season the Montreal Canadiens were riding high and were the odds on favorite to win the Eastern Conference. That was until they ran headlong into the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round of the playoffs. History somewhat repeated itself just over a month ago when the Canadiens, playing well, lost a home game to the struggling Flyers 2-1. Philadelphia then excelled on their longest winning streak of the season, six, while Montreal has not been the same since.
The Flyers (17-7-6) have quite an impressive record when you take into account that they were the last team in the NHL to record a victory when they started the season (0-3-3). Since that November 15 victory over Montreal, the Flyers lead the league with a 12-1-2 record.
Tuesday night they whipped the Colorado Avalanche 5-2 and claimed their fifth victory in a row. With a victory tonight against the Canadiens, the Flyers will match their longest streak. Mike Richards and Simon Gagne each recorded a goal and two assists. Philadelphia's Captain, Richards, has been the key factor in the Flyers rise from the ashes by recording seven goals and eight assists.
The Canadiens (16-9-5) lost their third in a row, 3-2, in Carolina. Montreal committed a season-high 11 penalties which led to all three of the Hurricane goals. If Montreal loses to Philadelphia, they will be saddled with their first four-game skid since February 2007.
Montreal is looking to change their luck by starting backup Jaroslav Halak in net, who has a 2.27 goals against average. Starter Carey Price has been out for four games with a lower body injury. He will face the Flyers backup goalie, Antero Niittymaki. Flyers starter Martin Biron will miss his second straight game as he recovers from the flu.

Pittsburgh -155 vs. Philadelphia
The Keystone State possibly boasts the best in-state rivalry in the NHL. The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers have met in several Stanley Cup Playoff series over the years, including last season's Eastern Conference Finals, won by the Penguins. While Pittsburgh has shown the form that powered them to the Stanley Cup Finals a few months ago, Philadelphia has done no such thing and has struggled all season long.
The Flyers (5-6-3) won their last time out over the Islanders 3-1. This ended an ugly three game losing streak after a four game winning streak seemed to get Philadelphia's season on track after a tough start. The Flyers will now travel across Pennsylvania to take on the Penguins (9-4-1) in a matchup that has not gone their way in recent years.
In addition to countering the Pens young stars of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, the Flyers must now deal with rising star Jordan Staal.
Staal was instrumental in getting revenge in Detroit Tuesday night for the Red Wings beating the Penguins in the Stanley Cup Finals. Detroit held Staal without a point in the six-game finals. Going into the third period, the Red Wings were up 5-2, but then Staal came alive by scoring a hat trick in the third period to force overtime. He then assisted Ruslan Fedotenko in overtime to clinch the 7-6 stunning come from behind victory. If Staal has come alive, its bad news for Philadelphia who surrendered four goals in their five game series last spring.
The teams met for the first time on October 14 as the Penguins beat the Flyers 3-2 in overtime in Philadelphia.
Ottawa -140 vs. Philadelphia
Once upon a time the Philadelphia Flyers were the lone winless team left in the NHL. They were floundering at 0-2-3 and looked hopeless and helpless until a home and home series against New Jersey. Perhaps it was inspiration garnered from the World Champion Phillies or the Flyers finally coming to life on their own. Either way the Devils were a good victim for the Flyers as they swept the home and home series and that was the start of a four game winning streak. That streak put Philadelphia over .500 until a loss to Edmonton last Sunday dropped them back to the .500 mark (4-4-3).
Part of the reason for the Flyers rise from the ashes has been their potent offensive attack. They have the NHL's best goals per game average of 3.91, which is nearly half a goal more than the second best team, Detroit (3.50). The Flyers leading scores are Simon Gagne and Mike Richards who share the team lead with 10 points a piece.
While not as severe as Philadelphia's start, Ottawa (5-5-2) also started their season with a disappointing slow streak. The team lost four straight and five out of their first six until they got things on track by winning three of their last four, including their last game Tuesday night. It was fitting that the two of the capitals in North America played each other on election night in America with Canada's capital city besting the Washington Capitals 2-1 in overtime.
Only allowing one goal has been the exception rather than the rule for the Senators. In their early season foibles, Ottawa had surrendered 25 goals in their 2-5-1 start but have shored their defense up as of late, allowing a stingy 1.75 in there last four games, in which they have won three.
Both teams will want to avoid penalties in this game as they both rank near the top of the NHL in the power play. Philadelphia is first by converting 25.9 percent of their opportunities, while Ottawa is second with scoring on 22.8 percent of their man advantages.
The Flyers owned the series last year at 3-0-1.
